I am hoping and praying that this weekend will look up, but there is slightly more cause for concern.
I'm leaving on Thursday afternoon for a big fat Texas wedding in Houston.
My favorite cousin Blair, who I introduced you to last year, is getting married this weekend.
I knew when the wedding invitation, which was roughly the size of a refrigerator and weighed as much as my youngest child, arrived that my standard summer uniform (flip flops and short yoga pants) would be a no-go.
This wedding will be, how you say, Fancy.
No problem. I shopped my closet and a little bit of Charming Charlie until I found something that A) fit and B) looked suitably cute.
My dilemma? My hair.
Texas and my hair don't get along well. Really, any place with lots of heat and humidity makes my hair go a little wild.
Remember the Friends episode where they all went to Barbados and Monica's hair went wild with the weather? Yep, me too.
My mane is next to impossible to tame in the summer. No amount of blow-drying or flat-ironing can tame the waves or the frizz. I'm at a loss because I don't want to show up at the bridal luncheon with Lauren and her perfectly coiffed size 0 bridesmaids looking like Weird Al Yankovic. Or Cousin It.
They say "Don't Mess with Texas," and I guess they're right. If you do, they give you hair like mine.
Do any of my readers have wavy hair that frizzes in the heat? Can anyone help me? Should I call it a day and go with seashell beaded dreadlocks like Monica did?

You know what's funny?!?! I live in central Florida (the capital of heat and humidity) & the picture of Monica is how my hair really looks, if I don't tackle it with the dryer. I say..add some shells (or spurs since you'll be in TX - haha)and have a big 'ole grand time!

ReplyDeleteI've been using two different conditioners, each once or twice a week. One is John Frieda Frizz-Ease "Rehydrate" (http://www.johnfrieda.com/products/product_detail.asp?productLine=frizz_ease&pid=82); the other is Aveeno Nourish + Moisturize (http://www.aveeno.com/hair-care/moisturize-conditioner). The Aveeno isn't specifically for frizz, but it does a pretty good job at taming my hair.
I've also used Sunsilk leave-in creme conditioner for curly hair. But I see that they've reformulated the product, so I don't know how it works now.
The other option is to go with a style like a French twist, with enough hairspray that it's not going ANYwhere!

I feel your pain with the frizzies! I just got back from Tennessee where the humidity was 95%(!!) and this worked to tame my frizz more than normal. I use a non-frizz shampoo and conditioner...I wash and rinse my hair in cold water, if I use warm or hot water the curls are too out of control to even blow dry out. After blowing out and using a straightening iron, I use a non-frizz finishing cream. By the end of the day my hair was curly again but not near as bad as usually. Hope that helps you!

ReplyDeleteI feel your pain, I'm going to try some new shampoo and conditioner for dry frizzy hair this week. I read 'In Style: Getting Gorgeous' recently and I never thought of my hair as being dry and damaged but I think it might be. I'll let you know when I find a good shampoo and conditioner that tames frizzy hair!
ReplyDeleteI have naturally curly, frizzy hair & I survived my sister's August wedding at the beach a few years ago w/ hair cream, spray gel lots & lots of hairspray. Maybe you could try a sleek ponytail & curl it & then spray it down good! Who cares if your hair is solid as a rock to the touch, at look you'll look great! :-) Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI learned a trick at my wedding - my hair is just a little wavy, but I usually have a ton of flyaways when I put it up. So when I need a sleek look, I use pomade to smooth it down. I just brush it back like a ponytail, run my pomade covered hands over the "outside" and then do an updo. It gives me that shiny, perfect, no flyaway look.

ReplyDeleteI LOVE the Friend reference! How hilarious would it be if you had her dreadlocks:) My hair gets pretty frizzie in the heat. Most of the time the straight iron takes care of it, but sometimes I use a spray called Frizease to make the frizzies not so bad. Good luck! I'm sure you will look beautiful frizzie or not!
ReplyDeleteOk, in my opinion Redken Creama Care is the BEST!!! I never knew I had coarse frizzy hair til I went to my stylist when I was 30!! I just thought my hair was unruly. Since I've been using that my hair is amazing. Now if you need more than that my sister who is FRIZZ queen tried it and said it is one of the only things that has worked on her hair, she loves it. I bet if your sells it, which a lot do, you could go in and ask for a sample to try it out. Put it in after you shower. The price for a full bottle isn't too bad either, around $15-20. Good Luck!!

I so hope you get your ac back today...I am in love with having central air in our house now...first time in 10 years! So I pray everyday it doesn't go out! ReplyDeletenone of your frizzness conditioner from herbal essences is better than any $25 salon conditioner i have ever used!! seriously!! that along with some de-frizzing cream while it is still wet is sure to help calm the frizzies. be sure to blow dry on cool with a diffuser. with your hair that may take like 2 days, so get started!!

Your hair is GORGEOUS! I don't have wavy hair, just naturally frizzy. I use Frizzease on it (not sure if that is spelled right) and it is great. I also use the smoothing oil stuff from the same company -- once my hair is styled, I put a little of that over the top to smooth it down.

Well, bless your heart, you really have had a tough few days! That's scary about your allergic reaction (or whatever it was--any idea what caused the swelling?). Must be even more miserable to be all swollen up AND hot.
ReplyDeleteThat "Friends" episode was one of my favorites. I can totally relate to the frizzy-hair thing, although I'm not sure mine was ever quite as bad as Monica's...ha.
maybe try some kind of hair cream ( I don't remember the name of the one I use), when I want straight hair I use it and then flat iron.

That's too funny! That picture is priceless...the Georgia humidity isn't much better. I straightened my bangs the other day and went outside...when I came back in, I had ringlets all around my face, but most of the time I have a bouffant!
