Dear Family,

Dear Family,

I suppose it is my own fault for asking my readers to recommend some Summer Reading.

I became thoroughly engrossed in Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games yesterday, and I expect to spend the better part of the day neglecting you finishing the story.

You're hungry? We have goldfish crackers.

You're thirsty? That's why I bought juice boxes. (Okay, those were a rare treat for a play date, but I am assuming you're desperate here)

You're sleepy? Fine, fine. You don't need a bath. Just grab some baby wipes, go to town, and climb into your bed and crib, respectively.

Collins may have written her novel for a younger audience, but the suspense, political intrigue, and allusions to the mythical Greek character, Theseus, hooked me. I want to find out if Katniss and Peeta make it.

So I suppose you'll have to endure your own "hunger games" today as I finish the book.

Okay, maybe not so much.

But I really do want to find out what happens. I haven't been this absorbed in a plot since Edward and Bella. That's a lot little bit sad, actually.

So I'll bide my time until you go upstairs for naps/quiet time today. I know you'll understand. You're bookworms too.
Love,
Mommy

{Have you read anything lately that you haven't wanted to put down?}

  3. My 10 year old just read Hunger Games on vacation and now I'm about to start it. I hear great things about it!

I just finished "The Girl with the Dragoon Tattoo" and it was much like that. Hard to put down. I agree with others, the first couple of chapters are background and are a little dry, but then it picks up. I was surprised no one warned me how "raw" it could be in parts, but I can't tell you how many people in the airports on our vacations commented when they saw I was reading the book!

  7. that book is amazing! Not something that I would normally pick up, but one I couldn't tear my eyes away from. Catching Fire was just as good. I can't wait until the third book comes out on the 24th of August (yes, I am counting the days)!!!

  10. Oh my gosh, that is so funny! My kids are up and grown now, but I am so like you when it comes to a good book, that I am sure I did the same thing when I had a good book in my hands. Doesn't it seem like if you put the book down you are neglecting the characters? You keeping thinking "I have to get back to them!" Books are such a wonderful escape. It is sad though when we finish them.

  11. You are too funny! That is the sweetest picture of the girls! I'm lovin' the Hissy Fit book by Mary Kay Andrews! I don't have NEAR the time I would like to commit to ignoring the kids to read it, but I do love it!

  14. What adorable cuties you have! Hmmm, trying to read some gardening books around here, very informative but not really page turners. I have a HUGE list from your link up, but I'm waiting until Fall to tackle that...

  15. Did you finish the book? I looked for it in the library today and didn't find that one, but they did have a few others by the same author. I didn't check one out this time. I had a moment of weekness in Sam's today and bought Mary Kay Andrew's latest book. I can't wait to start reading it!

  16. I had read the "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" series also in July. And I was flying somewhere last week and picked up "Hunger Games" for the plane! Loved it and couldn't put it down. I am now onto the next book and can't wait until the end of August for the third book!! I agree, while I liked the GWTDT books, I am enthralled with Hunger Games.

  18. We went to the beach for the 4th of July, and I absolutely could not put down those Michael Crichton novels. I do love a good novel!

Once, when my boys were little, I literally made myself take a break from reading fiction. I did not read one single work of fiction for a year. I finally let myself start reading fiction again when I thought I could handle myself a little better. Honestly, I think the house could fall down around me if I'm in the middle of a good story. :)

  20. I am going back through and reading all the James Patterson Alex Cross novels and was so engrossed in one the other day I didn't even notice until they quacked that there were two ducks standing next to me on my porch. True story! I love getting into a book!

  21. This is why I can't read books. Because I have this sickness that will not allow me to put them down.

My children run around like a bunch of hungry, dirty orphans...Husband has to dig through the hamper for clothes to wear, house falls apart...you get the picture.

  22. The Hunger Games was fabulous. And for those of you wanting more book crack, be sure to check out the Sookie Stackhouse series. (HBO's TrueBlood) Wonderful!

I love to hear your feedback! Please feel free to leave comments...just don't send me spam asking me to buy stuff off your website! I've got three kids and no money to purchase your magic weight-loss pill or bust enhancement, or whatever else you might be selling. Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you! :)
