Yesterday, I showed you a Travel Mug I made over using Clean Cut Fabric Interfacing. Today, I'll share how I used the Sewable Interfacing to make some cute summer tees for my girls.
This week was my first time using interfacing on my own, my first time cutting fabric with my Silhouette machine, my first time using a zig-zag stitch on my sewing machine (don't laugh!), and my first time adding embellishments to kids' clothing. Please keep that in mind should you spy an errant stitch here and there (and everywhere).
I was able to snag two dark pink Cherokee brand t-shirts in the girls' sizes from Target over the weekend. $5 a pop. JoAnn's had fabric on sale, so I picked up a 1/4 yard in my choices: brown for the cone, pink for the ice cream, dark pink and white for the cherry.
I used my Silhouette software to purchase an ice cream cone design for $0.99, separated all the elements, and made a few extra cones in case I ran into any problems.
The instructions for cutting with the Sewable Fabric Interfacing were straightforward and very easy to follow. I made sure to use the "Double Cut" option to make sure that my shapes went through cleanly with no tearing.
The wrong side of the fabric is a little shiny, and that's because of the Sewable Interfacing:
The Sewable Interfacing allowed me to iron the cone directly onto the t-shirt. It stayed put long enough for me to do a zig-zag stitch all the way around the shape...to hold it in place and to keep it from fraying:
I layered the "strawberry" ice cream on top and did the same stitch all the way around.
Time for a "cherry" on top!
Cute...but it needed something else!
I used my Silhouette and some Flocked Heat Transfer material to cut the word "sweet" out and iron onto the shirt!
Sweet, indeed!
Michaela Byrd was napping, but Natalie wanted to try hers on right away.
I was so over-the-moon-excited about how cute the tees turned out that I stuffed one in my purse for preschool drop-off the next morning to show my friend Christy, who was much more admiring than T. I'll give him credit for feigning interest, but he is not that good of an actor.
I give Silhouette an A+ for the ease of use with their new line of fabric interfacing. The software is still hard for me to figure out, but that's because there are so many options!

SWEET, indeed! These are so cute, Amanda!!!!!! You did a fabulous job. I'm with the commenter above, you should sell these. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't know what's cuter, your model or this shirt. Okay, I know which is cuter but the ice cream shirt takes a close second. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm with Christy! I think these are adorable! You did a great job on these--I don't see any errant stitches, and I just love the design! And I really like the way you added the "sweet" at the same angle as the cone. Good job all around!!
ReplyDeleteThose shirts are so SWEET! Sorry, I couldn't resist :)
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job. They really did turn out adorable. I admire all you creative, crafty ladies!
Jennifer

ReplyDeleteso adorable!! love how you did the cherry on the top and sweet up the side of the cone! can't wait to make shirts w/ cones for my girls-just will have to skip the sweet :)
ReplyDeleteThe T-shirts are "sweet" and your daughter is "adorable"! I have a Silhouette but didn't try yet using the fabric software.
ReplyDeleteThese turned out so well, and your daughter obviously loved it. I think I need to add a Silhouette to my list of things I "need" :).
ReplyDeleteThose shirts are adorable! Great job Amanda!
ReplyDeleteHow sweet. Wonder if I can do that with a tie pattern. I have a brand new sewing machine in its box. It has been sitting like that for 4 years now. I am going to have to learn to sew before my birthday. I might just have to start with a sweet little project like this. You made it look completely doable.
ReplyDeleteThese are adorable. You are making me want to be crafty...which takes a lot! Too cute!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! You are much braver than I. Although your projects are giving me courage. I think I am going to try my first-ever project this weekend! My Silhouette has been eyeing me up as it collects dust on my desk. It's been sitting there unused since I got it for Christmas. Poor guy. Thanks for the great tutorials, Amanda! :)
ReplyDeleteThose are adorable! I love the the cherry on top! I totally get the whole hubby not getting excited about your craftiness:) I show Jason stuff all the time and it is so not good at acting like he cares....I guess that is what girlfriends are for!
ReplyDeleteAdorable! The shirt and the smiling girl. ;)
ReplyDeleteThese shirts are absolutely adorable. You did a Fantastic job. I love the flower cherry on top. Thanks for the sweet comment on my blog!
ReplyDeleteAmanda - those. are. ADORABLE! I bet they LIVE in them this summer!
ReplyDeleteSeriously so cute.
Amanda! This is so darling! Now I have to go buy some of the fabric facing - cause I wannna do this. Well, this and the coffee mug from yesterday.... Geez! Nice work girl!
ReplyDeleteThat's so cute! I just added t-shirts that I made with my middle schooler to your linky!
ReplyDeleteSo adorable! Love the twisted flower cherry and the addition of the word "sweet".
ReplyDeleteI used to do similar iron-on/zig-zag appliques with a product called Wonder Under. I had forgotten all about it, and have never done anything for my daughter! I'm going to have to remedy that.
I love that! I need a Silhouette--so much more versatile than my Cricut.

Oh my goodness! This is adorable Amanda!
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it the best when kiddos love the clothes we make/embellish for them!
I'll have to try cutting fabric on my Pazzle. I'm going to try my regular interfacing first..will let you know how it goes :o)
Love your Sweet shirt - your daughter is adorable in hers! While I was here, I 'followed' you :)
ReplyDeleteVery cute! I still want to try fabric on my Cricut. I need to look into this flocked heat transfer. It looks like something I need to know about.
ReplyDeleteThis design is so cute! I love the fabrics, the cute cherry on top, and I especially love N's facial expression in the last photo. You can tell that she loves this shirt, too.
ReplyDeleteI still remember things that my mom made for me when I was young and I'll bet that your daughters will, too!
Those tees are seriously adorable!! Great work...well done!!
