When I first started reading blogs, I saw a great post over at The Nesting Place on how to hang a wreath. At the time, I'd pretty much only seen people use those clunky old plastic or metal wreath hangers, and it was what I used too. The Nester's technique was great...but it would only work for homeowners with wood doors because you had to be able to nail or tack through your ribbon and into the door.
I felt completely stuck. I wanted a beautiful front door like The Nester's, but my husband had already spent a bazillion hours pounding and drilling and
What good is cool crafty door decor when you can't properly display it?
So I just sort of lived with my clunky old door hanger for a couple of years until it occurred to me to try my own version of The Nester's idea. Here's how I put my wreaths together:
Supplies:
- Wreath
- Coordinating Ribbon(s)
- Scissors
- Clear Packing Tape
I mentioned yesterday that I prefer wider ribbon, but I've been making an effort to use what I have on hand, so skinny it was!
1. Take one end of your ribbon and loop it through the wreath, giving yourself enough length so the wreath doesn't hang too high or too low on your door.
2. (Skip this step if you're only using one ribbon) Do the same with the coordinating ribbon and...
3. Snip the ends so both ribbons are the same length.
4. Hold your wreath up to the door to be sure it's hanging at the spot you wanted.
5. Hold the top layer of ribbon out and away from the wreath and place the bottom layer of ribbon on the flat top of the door. Secure that layer with a strip of clear packing tape.
6. Line the top layer of ribbon up on top of the other layer and secure it with a second layer of packing tape.
7. Add one more strip of tape to secure the wreath and test it before you let go.
It will look like this on the top:
A little messy up there, but pretty secure.
This obviously will only work for lighter weight pieces. I wouldn't suggest trying to tape down wall buckets or heirloom pieces with ribbon and tape. Not bad for stuff picked up with coupons at craft stores! I haven't had a wreath fall down yet, and I've been using this technique for awhile now.
It does the trick and it's not visible on the other side of the door:
And I love the way the front looks too {wink}

Great wreath project and I love that you found an invisible way to hang it. Metal doors sure can present a problem, but you conquered it nicely. YAY
ReplyDeleteawesome! Thank you! wreath hanging on our metal doors has been something that challenged me!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the hint, I'll have to remember that!
ReplyDeleteI just did the exact same thing to our side door...except I used blue painters tape and you can see it:) Our front doors are wooden and I have permenant hooks there so all I have to do is switch out my wreaths.
ReplyDeleteSmart! Packing tape is good for so many things...
ReplyDeleteClever, looks great!
ReplyDeletegood tip!!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to try that!
Great idea. And, if you aren't worried about hanging it from a ribbon...command adhesive hooks work great. I use them to hang wreaths in various place during the holidays where I don't want to commit to a hole in the wall!
ReplyDeleteWonderful and simple. The welcome sign really pulls you in.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and saying hi.
Great idea! I do this to hang red bows on my windows at Christmas time. I never thought about using it for a wreath though.
ReplyDeleteWhile I do love this idea, my tape never stays and I am constantly putting the wreath back up and in some cases the wreath falls to pieces. And I am not a huge fan of using strong adhesives in the event I don't want it there anymore, so I found at Walmart in their silk floral section a white magnetic wreath hanger. It is super strong and doesnt scratch!! :)
ReplyDeleteI love this! So simple... and yet? why didn't I think of it?!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I use one of those 3M hangers that attaches to glass and it works great and has lasted for years. I don't like that with certain wreaths it shows. Your method would solve that problem.
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda! Thanks for visiting my 'burlap hurricane sleeve' post linked to Centsational Girl's fall craft link party!! Love this tutorial - very clever!!! Did you get your wreath at Tar-jay??? Thought I saw the same one there the other day and alllmost bought it!! Love it - very glam!!! I am sure your girls love it too!!
ReplyDeleteHave a great day! Heather
This is so smart, Amanda! One of those "why didn't I think of that?" things!
ReplyDeleteLove the vinyl welcome--and it's so cool that you made it yourself!

Amanda, That's a great idea and one that I'm putting to memory! I love the black feathers! Looks great!

What a great tip! I'm a fellow metal door'er. :) I'll definitely be trying this one! Love your wreath too! Good combo of Hween and classy.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog... I'm your newest follower! :)
Maybe you can try the 3M strips for your next wreath. But how you did it works too!
ReplyDeleteI have a metal front door that looks like yours. I don't like the metal over the door hangers either. I bought a magnetic wreath door hook. It works well for most of my wreaths. It only took me fours years of living in my house to realize that magnets stick to metal :)
ReplyDeleteGreat work around. I still think drilling can be done if you use the proper drill bit. Once you've got your screw permanently in place you just hang and go.
ReplyDeleteIt's easier and faster than making a ribbon to hang it on.
