...is where I will spend most of today. Sherry from Young House Love posted about the real life that happens behind the scenes of their famous blog, and it inspired me to show you all a pic of what I need to be working on today:
No, there was no tornado. No, FEMA has not turned this area into a Barbie refugee camp. If you don't have kids yet, I bet this blurry (sorry) photo is really good birth control. In fact, let me break it down for you:
1. Box of houses and small town toys that they have not played with in months. I eased it out of the bin on the shelf and into this cardboard box. Next, I will ease it into the back of my van and then ease it to the consignment sale. You have to handle these things delicately, lest you alert small children to the loss of their stuff. Then all hell breaks loose.
2. Barbie House. Those Barbies are hoarders. I've never seen people live like that, unless maybe you count the people who live in the room in the picture there. Oh wait, that's us...
3. RV. The Fisher Price Loving Family has had enough of this mess. They're loading up into their RV and going on vacation. I have half a mind to join them.
4. Vacuum on its side. I have no words for this. Maybe it is easier to feed the toys into the vacuum when I have it turned over like this.
5. Two pink tutus. Because it's nice to be able to pick up a tutu off the floor and put it on. So long as the dog isn't laying on it.
6. Stethoscope. I can't believe someone was operating a medical practice in there. Doesn't seem very sanitary. I think I'll write to the AMA.
So there you have it. A real look at how our play area looked as of yesterday afternoon. Hopefully it won't look like that by Saturday morning when Michaela Byrd's little friends show up for her birthday party. Because we want it to be clean before they trash it again. Right?
Y'all wish me luck in this organizing venture today! Do you have a problem area in your house that you need to tackle?
I hope you'll come back tomorrow to link up YOUR best post of the week to Weekend Bloggy Reading. Recipes, crafts, home decor, book reviews, funny stories, you name it. Come prepared to showcase your blog and find some great weekend reads.

My boys' play room is constantly a mess! We can spend an hour in there cleaning and organizing and the next day it's back to looking like a tornado hit!
ReplyDeleteHeehee! Ahh, the joys of childhood, I remember our play room looking like this growing up. I have a friend who boxes up several of her kid's toys, hides them & rotates them every 3 months so its like they have brand new toys again. :-) Send up the white flag if you need help! :-)
ReplyDeleteOur play 'area'..the whole house..looks like this most of the time.
ReplyDeleteIt's a vicious cycle. You clean, they mess it up, you clean, they mess it up.
Amanda - thank you for the laugh this morning - I NEEDED it! I can't even see the floor of my boys' room right now. I will probably be spending my day in there as well. I love this ... 'You have to handle these things delicately, lest you alert small children to the loss of their stuff. Then all hell breaks loose.' SO TRUE!!!

too funny! i think you snuck over and took a picture of our playroom-lol, course, my girls' room looks the same!
ReplyDeleteOh this brings back memories! Thankfully mine weren't huge fans of Barbie (and I was known to pitch the little stuff that came with them before the girls could get their hands on it, LOL).
ReplyDeleteHa ha. I hear ya. Good luck! Organizing is fun though (right?) ;)
ReplyDeleteHaha thats awesome! yup we have a room just like that and it tend to leak out into the rest of the house.
ReplyDeleteWow! You are cracking me up. But I know it's going to look fabulous when it's done. And all the mess just means your kids are having fun and making memories.
ReplyDeleteAnd this post is just going stay between you and me. Because, the excess stuff that kids accumulate, THAT is my husband's biggest fear of having kids. Keeps him awake at night. ;)
I think we all have places like that that need our attention! You always have such a fun outlook on things!
ReplyDeleteHope you got a lot accomplished. The mess didn't look so bad to me. I know adults with no kids whose family room looks way worse than this! In a few years you'll miss this kind of mess!
ReplyDeleteAw, come on--that looks like fun, not a mess, right? I have a friend who says that leaving a vacuum out at all times ups your cred as a mom--either it looks like you just vacuumed or you were about to--either way, you look good :). That's my theory about the vacuum, anyway--although I'm having a harder time explaining its unique position :).
ReplyDeleteDo I have a problem area in my house...hmmm...I wish! How about my whole house. My kids are 1 and 2, and I feel bad donating toys that are only a couple months old but they are TAKING OVER OUR HOUSE. One can only have so many storage devices before the storage devices need a storage device. Very fun post, it made me laugh out loud :). Take care and hope you have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteI just blogged about Organizing Toy Central in your home. I'm going to link it up at the party today. Check it out for some potential ideas ;)

Oh, boy. I should have taken pictures. You would not BELIEVE the mess on my desk. Well, if you can call it a desk. It was more of a horizontal surface absolutely loaded will all manner of thing--and Jack finally decided that he needed to step in. Between my desk and this one kitchen counter on which I'd been stacking mail, there was enough stuff to completely cover our kitchen table. And you may remember that our kitchen table is more than 11 feet long. Oy!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I've got it down to just two feet of tabletop that's still got stuff in stacks. Once I get through those, I think I need to have a glass of champagne!
Congratulations on being able to ease out a box of stuff. I need to do that in several areas of this house!
