Sometimes it's fun to stop by my local Salvation Army to see what diamonds in the rough they might have on hand. A few simple updates are usually all that's required to create a fun new piece for your home! With uncertain weather, I've refrained from bringing home makeover items...whether they are furniture pieces (that I don't have room for) or small accessories. It's no fun to spray paint in 30 degree weather. Don't ask me how I know that!
But it's a blast to window shop, isn't it? The common denominator in these finds is that a little paint makes a world of difference!
This armoire caught my eye as soon as Michaela Byrd and I stepped back into the furniture area. Can you imagine it with a fresh coat of paint and a new color for the hardware? Instant update!
(I seem to have a thrifty shopper/makeover lover in training)
Um, campaign dresser? Yes, please! These are a hot commodity in the blogosphere right now. This one is missing some of the hardware, but a real DIYer could tackle that problem. A bold, bright color for a child's room or to hold craft supplies in a craft area.
How cute would these nasty stools be with newly painted legs and fresh fabric on the cushions?
And the same goes for this bench/storage piece. I'm not sure exactly what this relic is, but I believe it is a storage piece because it looked like it had a lock on the front.
Antique dresser alert! This guy was in bad shape on the side that's not visible, but someone with great furniture makeover skills (hi, Kate) could make this piece handsome again.
I'm envious of those of you who have big front porches. This old sled would be so much fun for a winter display to greet your guests:
This coffee table currently says, "Hi, I live in Great-Aunt Maude's condo in Florida," but with new paint and some good styling, it could be welcomed into the modern world.
Here's another antique dresser...this one has a lot going on and some broken hardware, but we all know the power of paint and new knobs, don't we?
If you've never browsed the book section in your local thrift store, you are missing out! I've found so many amazing children's classics to build our kids' library...and for so little money. Beverly Cleary, Frances Hodgson Burnett, J.M. Barrie, Mark Twain, Roald Dahl, you name it.
I don't think I've ever found an entire series in one stop, but I have collected a series over the course of time. For example, just through browsing, I found the first three books in The Indian in the Cupboard series, a childhood favorite. The third book was a recent find, along with these:
Have I convinced you yet? Yes, completing makeovers on furniture and accessories is hard work...but it's certainly something you can be proud of. When times are hard like they are today, saving money on home decor is a must!
Which piece was your favorite, and how would you update it?

Oh my goodness. I have been wanting to find a hope chest JUST like that one!! What a great SA Store y'all have!
ReplyDeleteThrifting is a great way to save money and you can customize the piece to fit in your home.
ReplyDeleteWow, you found some GREAT stuff! I've never seen that much greatness in our store! Hmmm, might have to come start shopping with you!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, that first armoire & the storage bench had such great lines! They're just beautiful. I haven't been to the SA in town in ages, I usually hit the few thrift stores in Spotsy by the courthouse, I always find amazing glass pieces there too but looks like a trip to SA is in order soon!
ReplyDeleteWow...that wardrobe is crying out for ASCP!!!!

That armoire is amazing!! A Real find!!
ReplyDeleteI am always attracted to dresser with keyholes. Love the antique dresser.
ReplyDeleteI love me some thrift store shopping! I am in love with both the armoire and the sled!
ReplyDeleteWOW!! you have a great Salvation Army! Ours is very cutthroat on their prices! Deidre~
ReplyDeleteWow! I need to come to VA to go thrift shopping! I don't think I've ever seen that many great pieces here before! I love the storage bench. With a fresh coat of white paint and some pretty fabric it would be great to store shoes and sports equipment!
ReplyDeleteMy Salvation Army is terrible compared to yours. They talk a big game about not accepting broken or stained furniture, but from their inventory they don't stick to that. Plus they charge more than retail. Last time I was in there they had a nasty old stained couch for $500, no joke.
ReplyDeleteI love all the pieces you linked, but I've been looking for a chest for my mom (she wants one to use as a coffee table) so I think I'd go with that one. Recover the top with some vinyl, oilcloth, or indoor/outdoor fabric covered with clear vinyl. Maybe a fun faux ostrich fabric. I'd paint the bottom, I'd want a bright color but that's not quite her style, so maybe a distressed antique white. She has dogs that will distress it for her so it might as well start out that way!
I'm absolutely in love with that armoire!
ReplyDeleteI love it when you take us with you to your local Salvation Army. I always get so jealous--I guess the grass is always greener, eh? :) I like the armoire, definitely. It would look great painted up and distressed to look like a French antique.
ReplyDeleteThat antique dresser is screaming to come home with me!! I love that look. A little turquoise milk paint, some rubbed wax to shabby it up a little...Ok, so I have no room for it, and it's too cold to make it over right now, and I have no room to store it....but I want it anyway LOL!Your SA is so much cooler than mine!
ReplyDeleteWish my thrift stores were loaded up like yours!! I do stop in frequently...cause you never know what you will find. Sharing a post next week on my SA coffee table I got for a steal...stop over and check it out!

Look like some fantastic finds. I love thrifting!
ReplyDeleteI love some of those pieces! I think the one bench was a cedar chest. I have one from my mother that has been passed down and it looks similar. Where are you in VA? I am in Northern VA and if that store is close, I want to go, haha. I think I spotted a few things that have my interest. Thanks for sharing!

Browsing in thrift stores is so much fun! That sled probably would have come home with me.
