I have a simple makeover project to show you today! One of the goals I had for my home and my family this year was to entertain more. I know that many women (not just me!) struggle with getting their homes "just right" before they'll allow themselves to entertain. Even though we can't afford to remodel our downstairs bath, I could look for a few inexpensive ways to make it guest-ready, right?
Keep reading to see how I gave a vintage tissue box a makeover...and repurposed it to hold Kleenex Hand Towels for my guests:
My mom found this old metal tissue box in my Nannie's house and was going to throw it away, but I knew it would be perfect to give my guest bath a little flair. As you can see, it was a dull cream color...with old lady gold roses and what appeared to be melted candle wax:
I grabbed some white spray paint (use your favorite brand/color) and some newspaper to use as a drop cloth, and got to work painting! It took one quick coat on each side, and I let the piece dry for about an hour before touching it:
And here's the lovely, fresh "After" shot:
I felt like keeping the piece all one color (rather than hand-painting the roses) gave it a more modern look. The roses are more of a subtle background detail, and those beautiful interlocking circles on the sides can shine now!
Our downstairs bath is small and has only the tiniest amount of counter space, so I decided to take advantage of wall space and utilitze some tiny hooks I had on hand:
All that was left to do was adhere the hooks and hand towel holder to the wall with the removable adhesive! I know we have a few guests who are finicky about using cloth towels in someone else's home, so it's nice to give them another option with Kleenex. I also added a small candle, and removed the labels from the hand soap and hand sanitizer dispensers for a cleaner look:
If we had extra counter space, I'd add a small basket with some nice lotion or a pretty apothecary jar with seashells or something fun inside. For now, this was an easy way to add something welcoming to our guest bath without spending any money.

Clean the heck out of mine, threaten everyone not to make a mess, put a fresh box of kleenex out and clean towels. (: Love your cute little tissue holder.
ReplyDeleteI am one of THOSE who love paper hand towels versus hand towels that I'm not sure who has used. :)
ReplyDeleteSometimes, I just dry my hands on my clothes instead of using the hand towel provided..especially if it looks well used! I was just helping out at a painting party last weekend, and they supplied the kleenex hand towels. yippee!
You did a great job with the vintage Kleenex holder!

What a great idea! Do the Kleenex hand towels fit nicely inside?
ReplyDeleteI love the vintage tissue box both before and after. Super clever to hang it!!
ReplyDeleteWhat do they look like inside the tissue holder? I am tempted to buy some of the hand towels but I don't want to have to leave them in the box they come in.
ReplyDeleteI love it when I'm visiting someone and they have paper hand towels out for guests. A hand towel that is slightly damp from others using it is oogy to me.
ReplyDeleteI'll bet your grandmother would be happy to know that you repurposed one of her treasures to use in your own home.
What a cute idea! I love that you hung it - such a smart use of space!! I love the idea of the paper hand towels too - those are so great for guests! Thanks for the idea - I'm going to pick some up!
ReplyDeleteThat's an awesome idea and container! It looks great!
ReplyDeleteI never thought of a tissue holder going on the wall! Good idea!
ReplyDeleteWell, look at that. Great idea to put that vintage tissue box on the wall. Smarty! :)
ReplyDeleteToo cute! I really enjoyed all the fb pics of the treasures you were finding! I'm guessing you were down here last week when It was like 105 everyday....

ReplyDeleteI love that tissue box holder! The lines on it are so pretty, I would have never thought about putting it on a wall too, sweet idea, thanks for sharing! :-)
ReplyDeleteYou might still be able to do the lotion and such if you find a small basket you can put above the hand towel. Just A thought.
ReplyDeleteLove the tissue box idea. I think I might give that a try in my son's bathroom. I don't like using HIS hand towel after I wash my hands. haha
I have seen your comments on Big Mama and have been meaning to check you out. Love the blog! I sent my sister the link to your website because she enjoys dyi things now that her kids are grown.
